What is Confirmation?

Confirmation is a step in a person’s faith journey, where we celebrate an individual’s choice to confirm their faith as a member of body of Christ. While confirmation involves a ceremony, it’s not just a one day event. It will involve exploring, affirming and claiming faith in a journey that is both individual and part of a group. The program may, or may not, lead a participant to choose confirmation, the rite of the church which signifies full membership in the congregation and The United Church of Canada. In the United Church context, confirmation means the ‘confirming’ of Baptismal vows, which were taken earlier, usually when a person was an infant or a child. Participants who are not baptized are welcome in the program – baptism will be included prior to the act of confirmation for them.

Confirmation Sunday

After completing the confirmation sessions, participants will be invited to be confirmed in Sunday morning worship in front of the congregation. Like a baptism, participants will be asked to confirm their baptismal vows. This ceremony is a celebration with the wider church community as we recognize your commitment to following in the way of Jesus.

A New Creed

We are not alone,
    we live in God’s world.

 We believe in God:
who has created and is creating,
    who has come in Jesus,
       the Word made flesh,
       to reconcile and make new,
who works in us and others
       by the Spirit.

We trust in God.

We are called to be the Church:
    to celebrate God’s presence,
to live with respect in Creation,
    to love and serve others,
to seek justice and resist evil,
to proclaim Jesus, crucified and risen,
       our judge and our hope.

In life, in death, in life beyond death,
    God is with us.
We are not alone.

    Thanks be to God.

What can I Expect from Confirmation?

  • Sessions with mentors and peers. Participants in the confirmation program will meet over several months to discuss faith, the church, questions, and work on projects together. You will hear from many leaders and members of the church and explore faith as a group.
  • Safe Space for your questions, doubts, and curiosities. Sessions are a safe place to ask your questions about faith and God – in fact – that’s what this is all about! Discussions within the group will remain confidential and free of judgement.
  • No two people have the same faith. Confirmation is not to pressure anyone into believe the same thing. It is a personal jounrey for participants to discover for themselves what they believe. Your beliefs may differ from your peers, leaders, or parents, and that’s okay.
  • It’s your choice. If you do not want to be confirmed by the end of the sessions, that is up to you. Only you know when you are ready. You can still particpiate in the whole confirmation journey even if you choose not to be confirmed.
