Programs
Summer Music Camp runs programming for three different age groups to best fit each child’s ability. We aim to meet every child at their own experience level and offer quality programming for children and youth age 7-18.
Music Appreciation Program
Ages 7-8
In the Music Appreciation Program, campers will sing, dance, and play instruments as they discover music together. Campers will learn about rhythm, the basics of musical notation, choral singing, and more.
Band Program
Ages 9-14
In the Band Program, campers will select a band instrument (woodwind, brass or percussion) to learn and play as an ensemble. Campers will be divided between a beginner or intermediate section depending on their skill level and learn to read music, practice technique for their instrument, and perform together at the end of camp concert. Campers are welcome to bring their instruments home to practice each evening.
Leaders In Training Program
Grade 10-12
In the Leader in Training program, students entering grade 10 or older will have the opportunity to participate in the band program while also learning to become camp leaders. LITs will spend time with their mentors building skills in leadership, assisting in leading programs, and working as a team support our leaders and campers. LITs can earn volunteer hours for their time in the program. There is a $100 fee that covers snacks, supplies, instrument rental, trip fees, and shirts for our LITs.
Electives
Each camper will select 2 elective activities to be a part of. They will participate in these activities every day for the 2 weeks. These electives include the option of additional music experiences such as musical theatre, ukulele, recorder ensemble, or hand chimes, in which they will work towards another performance piece for our concert. There will also be options for those who need a break from music to engaged in other enjoyable activities such as board games, nature club, or team sports.
Rotations
Campers may choose between the Sports rotation or Arts rotation for the week. In these activities, campers will have the chance to learn different team sports and games, or create art pieces over the week. Campers can switch to the other rotation if they choose on the second week.
Camp Concert
On the Thursday of week 2 of camp, campers will take everything they have learned and share it with friends and family at our camp concert! All are invited to see our band program, music appreciation program, electives, and camp chorus perform. The Concert will take place at 6:00pm at Islington United Church.
Field trip
On the last day of camp, we have a fun-filled fieldtrip! Parents are welcome to join us to celebrate a great 2 weeks of camp together.

Frequently Asked Questions
What, when and where is Islington United Church Summer Music Camp 2025?
Summer Music Camp is an amazing, two-week music camp with programming for children and youth aged 7 to 18 years. The camp runs from August 11 to 22, excluding weekends, at Islington United Church, 25 Burnhamthorpe Road, Toronto, Ontario.
The camp offers an early childhood music experience for children aged 7 to 8 years, and instrumental (woodwinds, brass or percussion) opportunities for those aged 9 to 18 years. Youth entering Grade 10 and up are invited to participate in the Leader in Training program.
What electives are available?
The elective offerings change each year. In past years, electives have included board games, nature club, other instrument instrumental learning (handbells, violin, ukulele, guitar) and musical theater. On the first day of Summer Music Camp, campers will be able to choose several electives of interest to them.
I noticed that the age has changed for Music Camp. Why?
In the past, the age for participating in Band Camp was lowered from the age of 7 to 5. It was a great experiment, but we are aware that two intensive weeks of band camp is simply beyond the capacity of most (if not all) 5 and 6 year olds. In order to maintain a high quality of camp, where staff can be focused on excellent music programming, we have decided to return to the original minimum age requirement of 7 years old.
There is an exception to this: if your child was previously enrolled in band camp, and is in the 5-6 year old cohort, they will be invited to return to band camp this summer. New campers in the 5-6 age range will need to wait until they are 7 to enroll.
With this age adjustment, how will campers be placed in programs?
Great question! We want our programs to be structured to encourage age-appropriate learning but we also want them to be flexible to meet the needs of the campers. Finding the right space for each child is important so that they have a positive experience learning music!
In general, 7 and 8-year olds will be automatically placed into the Music Appreciation program, which is designed to expose children to music through singing, dancing, percussion, recorders and a host of other fun musical activities which will prepare them for their future as a band instrumentalist! Most children are not mature enough to begin playing a band instrument until they are around 9 years old. However, if your child already has a lot of musical experience or if you think they are ready to play a band instrument a littler earlier, email Jason (jason@islingtonunited.org) – our band director. He is open to having a conversation around what it might look like to offer your 8-year old the opportunity to try a band instrument. In addition to this, if you have a 9 year-old who is not yet ready to learn a band instrument, we could consider placing them in the Music Appreciation stream for one more year.
Who will be running Summer Music Camp?
Jason Locke and Brianna Coutlee are co-directors of Summer Music Camp and will be responsible for its operation. They will be supported by a team of excellent staff and volunteers.
What about the cost?
For campers, the early-bird rate is $450 until July 1. After that, the regular rate of $500 applies. For LITs, the program rate is $100.
A $50.00 non-refundable deposit is required to register for Music Camp. The deposit will be deducted from the balance of fees owing. The balance of $400 ($450 if registering on or after July 1) is due on or before the first day of camp. Registrations are not considered complete until the deposit fee has been received.
If Music Camp is canceled by Islington United Church due to unforeseen circumstances, your deposit fee will be refunded.
We do not want finances to be a barrier to attending Music Camp. If you have multiple children/youth in the same family, please inquire about our special family rates. If you would like to be considered for a financial scholarship to offset the cost of camp please select “financial scholarship” as payment amount and payment type below and Brianna Coutlee will contact you (families@islingtonunited.org; 416-239-1131 x 224).
Is Summer Music Camp a Christian Camp?
While Summer Music Camp is run by at Islington United Church, the programming offered is not religious. We welcome people from any faith tradition to be a part of our summer camp.
What is the age requirement to work at Summer Music Camp?
Our LIT program is from age 15-18, so our staff are required to be over 18. This is a great job for post-secondary students and young adults. If you know someone who might be a great fit to work at music camp, encourage them to reach out to Jason (jason@islingtonunited.org). There may be a limited number of opportunities for temporary employment.
Are there any opportunities for our Children to stay connected to Islington United Church programming when Music Camp is finished?
Of course! Islington United Church offers programming for children throughout the year, including our Sunday morning Godly Play, Youth Group and our Thursday evening Children’s Chorus program. If you’d like more information about these programs, reach out to Brianna Coutlee at families@islingtonunited.org.
What is Summer Music Camp's Behaviour Policy?
For the enjoyment of everyone participating, we expect that campers will show kindness to each other by engaging in ways that are respectful. On the first day of camp, we will communicate specific rules which will promote safety and make space for a successful program.
Here’s what we expect:
1. Campers must be respectful of their leaders by listening to instructions.
2. A leader needs to know where campers are at all times.
3. Campers are expected to treat each other with kindness.
4. Campers are expected to respect the boundaries of other campers – uninvited physical contact will not be tolerated. (keep your hands to yourselves!)
5. Campers must refrain from inappropriate speech, such as swearing, name-calling or other offensive language.
6. Campers must not damage the physical space of music camp such as the building and camp equipment.
7. Campers are expected to adhere to a general sense of common-sense. Any extreme behaviour, such as fighting, racism, bullying or harassment will absolutely not be tolerated.
Any camper who, after a warning, continues to behave in a manner disruptive to the group or leader may be removed for the remainder of camp, with no refund.
