In Our Hearts
Paul Stewart
Paul Richard Stewart (May 3, 1954 – November 9, 2025) left this world to return to God’s heavenly home on the evening of November 9, 2025 with his sister Joyce by his side. He was 71. Paul was a well-known and cherished member of the Islington United Church family, and a strong advocate of the redemptive power of AA. He will be deeply missed by the many friends he made in both of these spiritual communities.
Paul was born in Saint John New Brunswick, the youngest of ten children. While his early childhood was full of love and promise – he lost his sight at the age of six due to a brain tumor. Despite this challenge, and in large part due to the loving encouragement of his mother, Paul refused to be constrained by his loss of sight, and he lived a full and fiercely independent life with several adventures and accomplishments touching and inspiring many along the way.
Paul loved country and gospel music, 1930’s radio programs, western movies, good food (as long is it wasn’t green), meditation in the Islington United Church sanctuary, tandem biking, bumper bowling, backgammon, guitars, lottery tickets, good jokes and above all meals with his many friends. Those gifted with one of his clothes peg rocking chairs now have a limited-edition treasure – a reflection of his love for others. He wrote and recorded several songs including “Tag-Along Paul”, “The Road of Life”, “Home Where Doggies Go” and “The Better Way” among so many others. He was especially fond of his cherished guide dogs including his favorites: Roadie, Partner and Katie.
Paul is survived by his sisters Joyce Stewart and Norma Grundy, his nephew Terry Stewart as well as many other nieces and nephews and as his beloved Gerrie Regular (Newf) who cared for him like a mother for many decades.
Paul’s life will be celebrated at Islington United Church (25 Burnhamthorpe Road, Etobicoke) on Friday, November 14, 2025 at 11:00 am. The service will be livestreamed via islingtonunited.org.
Donations in memory of Paul may be made to the Mabelle Food Program at islingtonunited.org/make-a-gift .

Ron & Genalda MacNeill
MacNEILL, GENALDA (nee BRICK) November 5, 1932 – June 5, 2025 Passed away peacefully in the presence of family. Wife of Ronald, recently celebrating their 69th wedding anniversary – a timeless love story. Loving mother of Elizabeth (Gary), Michael (Hélène), Stephen (Susan) and Catherine (Jeff). She absolutely adored grandchildren, Gregory (Sarah), Christine (Travis), Michael (Alex), Matthew, Patrick, Sarah and Jessica; and great-granddaughter, Sutton. Predeceased by parents, Reginald and Hilda; and brothers, John and Bill. Born in Kincardine, Mom spent her early years at the Royal Hotel, owned by her parents. She returned often, most recently last summer. In Kincardine, Mom was “Bricky”, a nickname that always brought a twinkle to her eyes. A Ryerson chemistry grad, she met Dad in the lab at work. Our home was full of activities and celebrations, all organized by Mom. She enjoyed sports (a fierce basketball player in her day), shopping for the grandkids, travel, and volunteering through Islington United Church and other organizations. She was an avid bridge player; and likely was still working on charade skills for the next family competition. Mom and Dad travelled extensively, but always came home to Deanewood Cres. Mom loved her 55+ years there. Well done, Mom. So much laughter and many special memories. We will toast you forever. Bless you. A private family service will be held at a later date. If desired, donations may be made to Covenant House, in Mom’s name.
MacNEILL, RONALD July 26, 1930 – June 29, 2025 A true gentleman, predeceased three weeks earlier by his wife of 69 years, Genalda. He adored life with her. Loving father of Elizabeth (Gary), Michael (Hélène), Stephen (Susan) and Catherine (Jeff). Cherished being grandpa to Gregory (Sarah), Christine (Travis), Michael (Alex), Matthew, Patrick, Sarah and Jessica; and great-grandpa to Sutton. Predeceased by parents, Russell and Muriel; and sisters, Isabel (Jean) and Betty (Harry). A chemical engineer (University of Toronto, Chem Eng. ’52), with a successful career in the paperboard industry. We often found him inspecting packaging in grocery aisles. Apologies to those who bought slightly torn boxes. A huge sports fan, especially of the Maple Leafs. He and Mom were at the 1967 Cup winning game. We’ll think of you Dad, at the next parade! Most impressive though, was that Dad always knew he was part of a bigger community. Constantly engaged in acts of kindness and volunteering, through Islington United Church, and other organizations. Dad had such a genuine interest in people. He made friends everywhere – from early days in Malton to engineering, Deanewood neighbours, through to more recent ones in retirement. He led a full life, and now joins Mom and others, who have gone before him, on new adventures. He will certainly be game. Well done, Dad. You lived well, laughed often and cared deeply. We are so proud and will cherish you forever. A private family service will be held at a later date. If desired, donations may be made to the Daily Bread Food Bank, in Dad’s name.

David Bruce Pellow (October 21, 2024)

With sadness we inform the Islington United family that Erin Pellow, our Financial Administration Lead staff member, lost her father on Monday morning. Our condolences to her and her family. While Erin is on bereavement leave, the office will be closed on Friday until further notice.
Obituary
At the young age of 69, Dave passed peacefully with his daughter, Erin, holding his hand after a battle with cancer. Predeceased by his parents, Jim and Grace Pellow, he is survived by his brothers Brian and Scott (Cheryl). Dave’s greatest joy was being a Dad to his daughter, Erin, and an uncle to his nieces Koryna (Derek), Madelyn (Gareth), and Marijka, his nephew Devan (Alex), and his great-nephew Ben and great-nieces McKenna and Emma.
Dave was born and raised in Niagara Falls, Ontario. After high school, he set off looking for adventure as he travelled to Europe, Egypt, and Mexico with his friends. Over the years, he explored many hobbies, including bird watching, swimming, gardening, and bonsai. He tried his hand at creating AI images of his family and pets. Dave was a storyteller if ever there was one. Whether they were true or not, well, we’ll never know. He had an immense love for music and forever curated mixed tapes, CDs, and Spotify playlists. His final playlist, Scooby Snacks, consists of 500 songs by (almost) 500 artists. Creative license, he would say.
Dave was intelligent, creative, curious, and, despite his curmudgeonly exterior, a big softy. He appreciated a good tradition, from Saturday morning breakfasts with his friends to the movies with his daughter on Christmas Eve. He will always be remembered for his sense of humour. His quick wit and quips could only be classified as #classicdave.
Thank you to his family and friends, who surrounded him with love and support these past few months. A special thank you to the staff at Dr. Bob Kemp Hospice, who took special care of him in his final days. Words can not express our gratitude for their kindness and compassion.
A private celebration of life will be held at a later date. As expressions of sympathy, donations can be made to Dr. Bob Kemp Hospice House in Dave’s name.

Dr. Peter Lindsay (October 5, 2024)

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Peter Lindsay, a cherished father, grandfather, loving husband, esteemed professor, author, passionate traveler, and dedicated volunteer, who departed this world on October 5, 2024, at the age of 87.
Born on May 25th, 1937, in Montreal, Quebec, Peter’s life was marked by a deep commitment to education and the betterment of others. He earned his Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Toronto and started his career at the University of California, San Deigo. While there, he co-wrote a very successful Psychology textbook that was used in many universities across the globe. Following that, he became a beloved professor at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (U of T). For over four decades, Dr. Lindsay inspired and mentored countless students, in both Canada and the United States, leaving an indelible mark on the academic community with his insightful teachings and compassionate guidance.
Peter was a devoted husband to a wonderful wife, Annette. Together, they climbed mountains and sailed oceans. They were truly a team and worked together as a couple to achieve their dreams. They also had two children, Jennifer and Chris, whom he deeply loved and supported in all their endeavors. His love and wisdom were the cornerstones of their lives, and his legacy will continue to guide them.
An avid traveler, Peter’s curiosity and love for the world took him to many countries. From the bustling markets of Egypt to the tranquil fjords of Norway, he embraced each journey with enthusiasm and a sense of wonder, always eager to learn and experience new cultures. When not travelling, Peter would spend much of his time at the cottage with his wife where they enjoyed the tranquility and peace that nature provides.
Peter’s altruism extended far beyond his professional life. He dedicated countless hours to volunteer work wherever he was. His efforts spanned various causes, including cerebral palsy (OFCP and Blissymbolics), refugee support (Islington United Church), employment supports (Corbrook), and humanitarian aid (C.A.R.E). He was an active member of his church community and was always willing to lend a hand in a variety of community projects. His selflessness and dedication touched the lives of many, creating ripples of positive change everywhere he went.
Even as he began to slow down a little, his passions and energy carried on with him. With his move into an assisted living environment, he was engaged and continued his love of film with the introduction of a movie club for the other residents. He could spend hours talking about film and always wanted to hear what everyone’s favourite film was.
Peter is survived by his loving children, Jennifer and Chris; daughter in law, Catherine; his grandchildren, Matthew, Charlotte, Myah, Frances, James, and Nicholas; and a wide circle of friends, colleagues, and former students who will forever cherish his memory.

Fred Leslie (August 6, 2024)

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Fred Leslie on Tuesday, August 6th, in his 91st year.
Fred’s life was a remarkable journey. Born into challenging circumstances, Fred spent his early years as a ward of the Toronto Children’s Aid Society being shuffled from foster home to foster home in Toronto. At age 12, his life took a dramatic turn when he was fostered and subsequently adopted by the Leslie family of Parkdale. This act of love and kindness set him on a path that would lead to an extraordinary life.
After attending St. Andrew’s College in Aurora, Fred began his professional journey at the family business, Canada Cartage, where he learned the trucking industry from the ground up. In 1973, he acquired the company from his father, Rodger Leslie, and, together with his business partner, transformed it into a leader in the Canadian trucking industry. Fred’s tenure with the company spanned 50 years, during which he played a crucial role in its expansion and success.
When not working, Fred enjoyed sports, including tennis, golf, curling and skiing. He was an active member at Mississaugua Golf and Country Club for over 55 years, where he was the second of four generations of members.
Service and faith were central to Fred’s life. He was a dedicated member of Islington United Church in Etobicoke, where he served faithfully in many capacities including Church Elder, Trustee, and ultimately earned the designation Honourary Trustee. A particular passion of Fred’s was the church’s Mabelle Food Program where he volunteered well into his 80s.
Fred also found joy in serving his broader community. As a Rotarian for 25 years, he was named a Paul Harris Fellow, the organization’s highest honour. He was involved with Goodwill Services for 12 years, and served on many professional and volunteer boards over the years.
But family was everything for Fred and brought him his greatest joy. He was a devoted husband to Donna, the true love of his life. He was a loving and devoted dad to Heather, Rodger, Kimberley, and Susan. His love for Donna and their children was boundless, and together they created a home filled with warmth, love, and laughter. When grandchildren and then great-grandchildren came along, he became their beloved Grumps and loved them boundlessly as well.
Fred Leslie’s life was marked by gratitude, service, and immense love. He lived a remarkable life and was grateful for every moment of it. This legacy will live on in our hearts forever. We will miss his humour, his generosity, his gentle kindness, and his unwavering love.
He is survived by Donna, his loving wife of 65 years; his brother Robert Leslie (Jenny Beeson) of Nelson, NZ; his four children Heather (David Muir), Rodger (Marion Brennan), Kimberley, and Susan (Randall Ugolini); his grandchildren Thomas (Stephanie Gagnon), Lindsay (James Hackey), Brennan, Trevor, Kevin, Erin, Alexandra, Carter; and his great-grandchildren Leo and Isla.
The family extends its gratitude to the staff at Parkland on Eglinton for their kindness over the last two years.
Visitation to be held at Islington United Church in Etobicoke from 5:30 – 9pm on Wednesday, August 14th. A private family service will follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Fred’s memory either to the Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada or to his church home, Islington United Church, at Give in Memory or by e-transfer to give@islingtonunited.org (“In Memory of Fred Leslie”). Peter Tower (July 18, 2024)
On July 18th, at the venerable age of 99, Peter Tower peacefully passed away at the Sunnybrook Veterans Centre.
Peter’s life journey began in a farming community in Western Ukraine, where he was lovingly raised by his grandparents. At the age of 11, amidst the harsh realities of the Great Depression, he emigrated to Canada to join his family who had recently resettled in Toronto. Despite the challenges of a new country, Peter persevered. While attending school, he supported his mother, stepfather Walter, and younger sister Ada, acquiring an array of practical skills that would serve him throughout his life.
With the outbreak of World War II, Peter volunteered to serve in the Canadian Army. He was among the last cohorts dispatched to Europe, where he dutifully carried out transport missions across Italy, France, the Netherlands, and Germany, moving officers, wounded soldiers, and liberated POWs. After the war, Peter found his calling in the automotive industry, dedicating his career to parts distribution and warehousing, culminating in his retirement from Acklands-Grainger. Through family friends, he met his wife, Annie, and they settled in Scarborough, where they lovingly raised their two children, Linda and Stephen.
A man of substantial skill and determination, Peter built a family cottage, cultivated gardens filled with fruit trees, and was always ready to lend a helping hand to those with automotive and home renovation projects. Alongside Annie, he was deeply involved with Wilmar Heights United Church, notably serving as a Boy Scout leader. His leisure pursuits included fishing, golf, and woodworking. A dedicated Mason, Peter eventually rose to the esteemed position of Master of Antiquity Lodge, Toronto, alongside his close friend Art and brothers-in-law, Bob and Bill. Following Annie’s sudden passing, Peter moved to Etobicoke, closer to his surviving family. It was here that he met Marilyn, his loving partner, at Islington United Church. Both recently widowed, they found solace and joy in each other’s company, embracing retirement together, traveling, and participating in church activities until Marilyn’s passing in 2018.
In the months leading up to COVID-19, Peter maintained his independence in a retirement home, despite facing increasing physical and cognitive challenges. Thanks to the timely support from Veterans Affairs, he transitioned to the Sunnybrook Veteran’s Wing, where he lived out his final days in a compassionate and dignified environment surrounded by fellow veterans and caring staff.
Peter will be fondly remembered for his physical strength, unwavering work ethic, and his mastery in working with his hands. His quiet, steadfast demeanor, coupled with his intrinsic respect for any and all people, regardless of race, religion, or economic status, left an indelible mark on those who knew him. We can only attribute these qualities to the kindness and opportunities bestowed upon him in his younger days.
With heavy hearts, we say farewell to Peter. He leaves behind his daughter Linda (Bob), his son Steve (Elizabeth), his grandsons Simon and Darcy, his granddaughter Allison, and numerous loving nieces, nephews, friends, and neighbors. It was indeed a life well-lived.

William (Bill) Drinnan (March 14, 2024)

It is with deep regret that I announce the passing of my husband, Bill Drinnan, at home on Thursday, March 14, 2024. Bill had been fighting multiple myeloma for several years and he finally decided to take back his life on his own terms.
Thank you very much to the staff at the Trillium Health Partners, the palliative care doctors from Dorothy Ley Hospice, and the Mississauga Hospice for their wonderful care in a hopeless situation.
After attending too many funerals over the past two years, Bill decided that he preferred a party instead of a funeral and he had this on November 25, 2023 as he didn’t expect to make it through Christmas.
On Sunday, March 24, 2024, from 2:00 to 6:00 pm, friends are invited to pay their respects and celebrate his life at The Top of The Mark party room in The Applewood Landmark, 1300 Bloor Street, Mississauga, L4Y 3Z2, his home for the past 16 years.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Scott Mission or the Mabelle Food Program of Islington United Church would be appreciated.
